Am I Being Punked?

2 Feb

That’s the first thought Holly had when Mike proposed.  “I didn’t realize what was happening because it’s the last possible way I imagined him proposing.  It’s so unlike him.”  But what’s so special about this story, is that the proposal was perfect for Holly.

In October, Holly received an email from her roommate.  NBC was going to be doing a story on couples in NYC, and one of the featured couples just cancelled last-minute.  He asked if Holly and Mike could fill in, and without hesitating, she said yes.  She was shocked when Mike agreed, as being filmed while ice skating isn’t exactly a guy’s dream come true.  They were told they’d be picked up on Tuesday (11.1.11) at 8 pm, and to try to look nice because the clip of them ice skating was going to be used in a Christmas broadcast.

At Wollman Rink in Central Park, they’re hooked up to mics and told to skate around the rink 3 times, and then make their way to the center so they can answer a few questions.  So they start skating and joking about how bad they must look because they haven’t been ice skating since they were kids, and Mike is distractingly looking at the camera.  Just as Holly says “stop looking at the camera, we’re supposed to look natural!” Mike’s down on one knee asking Holly to marry him.  All Holly could say was “no, are you kidding?”  The lights and cameras are surrounding them, and Holly says yes.  Just as they kiss a crowd starts cheering.  Mike’s family and their closest friends were all there.

This is the happiest moment of Holly’s life.  But it gets better.  She’s told that Mike had entered a contest hosted by NBC, looking for a guy who was interested in proposing on camera to air during the Rockefeller Tree Lighting ceremony on November 30th (also coincidentally, Holly’s birthday).  Turns out, Holly and Mike’s love story had quite the impact on the crews of NBC.  He was chosen over 2oo applicants to showcase his love for Holly on national television.  As Holly said, “after 6 and a half years of dating, this is how I got to the next step, with the most wonderful guy in the entire world.  It was worth the wait.”  I couldn’t agree more.  Watch the proposal and see for yourself.
