Love Prevails: A Boston Marathon Proposal

17 Apr

Andrew Ruggiero had a plan to propose to his girlfriend after she crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon. His plan was elaborate, and even included working at the Gatorade tent at the finish line so he could pop the question in front of friends, family, spectators and the Boston Herald news crew.

He didn’t get a chance to propose at the finish line, but this story does have a happy ending. This year’s Boston Marathon will be remembered by most for the tragic events that occurred. But for this happy couple, this day marks the beginning of the rest of their lives together. Love conquers all.  Read more.

Marriage is a Marathon

16 Apr

Today is the 116th Boston Marathon, and the best day of the year to live in Boston.  I wanted to connect this post with the marathon and as luck would have it, an amazing love story fell into my lap on Saturday night.  Drew and I were having dinner at City Bar in the Lenox Hotel when down sat another couple.  When she ordered a martini and he ordered a ginger ale, we could only assume he was running the marathon.  Turns out, he is running the marathon today, but this, is a love story.

The couple, Pattiann & Aaron met in 2005 on Shelter Island.  They were both there to run the annual Shelter Island 10K.  That night, they met at a party and clicked right away.  Running was one of the many things they had in common.  They had their first date at Cilantro in the Upper East Side, he spent a weekend at her house in Long Beach and before Pattiann knew it, she had fallen in love.

They kept running races together, as that’s where it all began…

In 2006, they ran the NYC Marathon side by side.  With friends and family cheering them on, and a day of perfect weather, Pattiann finished the race at her personal best.  At the finish line, Aaron proposed.  He had carried the ring 26.2 miles in a Tylenol package in his pocket.

Fast forward to the 111st running of the Boston Marathon: April 16, 2007. It was then that Aaron and Pattiann exchanged their wedding vows in a civil ceremony at the top of Heartbreak Hill while running the Boston Marathon.  They then continued to the finish line running the last 5 miles together as husband and wife!

“Making up heartbreak hill together, is the best way to begin a life together.  We will climb many hills together and have many finish line moments.”

Watch the couple exchange vows during mile 20 of the 2007 Boston Marathon!

Since their wedding day, Aaron is still running marathons.  In fact, today is his 15th year running the Boston Marathon.  Pattiann and their 3 little boys (“future heartbreakers”) will be right at the top Heartbreak cheering on dad.  Go Aaron!!
